Mumbai Indians bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has backed pacer Deepak Chahar despite his costly fielding mistakes during Mumbai Indians’ defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens.

KKR kept their playoff hopes alive with a tense four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, successfully chasing 148 with seven balls remaining.

After the match, Mhambrey refused to single out Chahar for blame, saying he would not “throw him under the train” over the dropped catches and communication mix-ups that proved costly during the chase.

Deepak Chahar’s Fielding Errors Hurt MI

One of the biggest turning points came in the 10th over when a top-edged shot from Rovman Powell landed safely between Chahar and teammate Robin Minz after confusion in the deep. Later, another miscommunication involving wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton nearly resulted in a collision while attempting a catch.

The dropped chances shifted momentum toward KKR in a low-scoring thriller.

Mhambrey Stands By His Player

Speaking after the game, Mhambrey defended the senior pacer and reminded critics that fielding mistakes are part of cricket.

“No one does it on purpose. You drop catches. It just happens.”

He also stressed that Mumbai Indians remain focused on finishing the season professionally despite being out of playoff contention.

Mumbai’s struggles this season continued with another batting collapse, as senior stars Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav failed to make major contributions in a must-win game.

Captain Hardik Pandya also admitted after the match that poor fielding has repeatedly hurt the five-time champions throughout the season.

Meanwhile, KKR’s victory keeps their playoff qualification hopes alive heading into their final league match against Delhi Capitals.
