The 2026-27 domestic cricket season in India promises to be one of the biggest and most competitive in recent years, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India announcing a massive calendar featuring 1,788 matches across men’s, women’s, and age-group competitions.
The new season will officially begin on August 23, 2026, with the prestigious Duleep Trophy, which returns with six zonal teams competing for glory.
Duleep Trophy to Open the Season
The traditional curtain-raiser of India’s domestic calendar, the Duleep Trophy, will once again showcase top talent from across the country. The tournament is expected to provide a strong platform for players aiming to break into the national setup.
Following the Duleep Trophy, the historic Irani Cup will begin on October 1. Defending Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir will take on a powerful Rest of India side in what is expected to be a thrilling clash.
Ranji Trophy to Continue in Two-Phase Format
The Ranji Trophy, India’s premier first-class tournament, will continue with its two-phase structure introduced in recent seasons.
- 32 teams will compete in the Elite Group
- 6 teams will feature in the Plate Group
- Phase 1 will run during October-November 2026
- Phase 2 resumes in January 2027 and concludes in February
Between the two Ranji phases, India’s top domestic white-ball competitions will take center stage:
- Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – Senior Men’s T20 competition
- Vijay Hazare Trophy – Senior Men’s List A championship
These tournaments remain crucial pathways for emerging players targeting the India national cricket team and franchise leagues.
Major Focus on Women’s Cricket
The upcoming season also highlights the growing importance of women’s cricket in India. The women’s domestic season will begin with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy during October-November.
This will be followed by:
- Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Trophy
- Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy
- Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal One-Day Trophy
These tournaments will run between December 2026 and February 2027, while women’s age-group competitions are scheduled from November through January.
New Opportunities for Emerging Players
One of the most exciting additions to the 2026-27 season is a new match involving the winners of the CK Nayudu Trophy against a Rest of India Under-23 squad.
According to the BCCI, this initiative is aimed at creating a stronger competitive platform for emerging young cricketers and improving the transition pathway into senior domestic cricket.
Additionally:
- The Men’s U-23 State A Trophy has been converted into a T20 competition
- The prestigious Vizzy Trophy will also switch from one-day matches to the T20 format
The move reflects the growing influence of T20 cricket in player development and talent scouting.
Weather-Based Scheduling Adjustments
To ensure better playing conditions and smoother scheduling, the BCCI has also made several adjustments:
- The Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy Elite Group matches will be played entirely in Bengaluru and Mysuru due to weather concerns in northern regions during January.
- The Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy has been advanced to November-January for improved player preparation and tournament management.
BCCI Statement on the New Season
In its official announcement, the BCCI stated:
“The 2026-27 domestic season reflects the BCCI’s continued commitment to building a strong and competitive domestic structure while ensuring a balanced progression across formats and categories.”
The packed calendar underlines India’s commitment to strengthening grassroots cricket, developing young talent, and maintaining one of the most competitive domestic systems in world cricket.
