Helena Cazaute: No one is too short for volleyball – FIVB

Height has always been one of the most visible attributes in volleyball, but it has never been the only one that matters. Players find different ways to make an impact, developing strengths that allow them to compete, contribute and succeed at every level of the game.

At 1.84 metres, Helena Cazaute is not among the tallest outside hitters in international volleyball, a role often occupied by players with greater height and reach. Yet the France captain has built a career at the highest level of the sport, demonstrating that technical quality, versatility and intelligent decision-making can be just as influential as physical advantages.

“I think when you are small, you should really work on your physical development,” Cazaute said. “It’s very important. You need to jump higher and, technically, you have to find better solutions. You have to be able to attack in all directions, you have to be able to find the blockers’ fingers to make a block-out, and I think this is the most important thing for smaller players.”

Height can create advantages, but volleyball constantly demands solutions. Players who cannot simply attack over a block must learn how to use it. They must develop a wider range of options, improve their timing and become comfortable adapting to different situations during a match.

Those challenges are familiar to Cazaute, who believes young players should focus less on what they lack and more on the areas of their game they can continue to develop.

“I will just tell them that if they want something, they have to keep pushing and believe in their dreams,” Cazaute said. “It’s not because you are small that you cannot play volleyball. You have a lot of skills to improve and develop. If you really want to become someone or achieve something, you have to believe in it and just go for it.”

Versatility is particularly important in a role that demands contributions across the court. Outside hitters are expected to attack, receive serve and defend, making all-round ability one of the position’s defining qualities.

“As an outside hitter, the two things that are really important for me are having very good back-row abilities, such as passing and digging,” Cazaute said. “And I think you should be able to find really good options in attack, to find the blockers’ fingers, attack the diagonal and hit the line. You need to be able to have every option available.”

Those details may not always attract the same attention as a powerful spike or a spectacular block, but they often determine how complete a player becomes. Passing, defence, shot selection and decision-making are skills that allow athletes to remain effective regardless of the opponent on the other side of the net.

Like many top athletes, Cazaute’s career has also included periods away from the court through injury. The experience reinforced one lesson that has stayed with her throughout her career.

“The biggest lesson that volleyball gave me, I think, is never to give up,” Cazaute said. “I had some injuries, I came back from injuries, and I love volleyball and I love to play. I feel really lucky to be able to make a living from volleyball and to be able to play volleyball. It’s my passion. It’s my life, really, and I hope young players can be able to do this too.”

Injuries and setbacks have been part of Cazaute’s career, but they have never changed how she feels about volleyball.

Players bring different qualities to the court, develop different strengths and follow different paths. Height can be an advantage, but it is only one part of a game played in many different ways.

Volleyball has room for different styles and different paths to success. No one is too short for the game.
