Troy University has celebrated the achievements of alumnus Kim Swan, a Bermudian Parliament member and a trailblazer in the island’s golf legacy.
Swan was recently honoured with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bermuda Tourism Authority in recognition of his contributions to the sport.
“Swan, who was named Most Valuable Player of TROY’s 1979 golf team, was honored with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bermuda Tourism Authority in November. The award recognized Swan for his lifelong contributions to the sport of golf, spanning his trailblazing playing career and his impactful work in politics and on industry boards,” the University said.
“This award is humbling and reminds me of the power of perseverance and belief in the potential of others,” Swan said.
“Golf has been my life’s passion, not just as a sport but as a means to create opportunities for young people and to showcase Bermuda’s beauty and culture to the world.”
Dr Jack Hawkins, Jr, chancellor of Troy University, said Swan has been a “tremendous ambassador” for the Alabama-based university.
“Kim Swan has been and continues to be a tremendous ambassador for Troy University,” Dr Hawkins said.
“His record of service reflects his commitment to and love for his country and its people.
“We are proud of our relationship with him, and we congratulate him on the wonderful legacy he has created and this well-deserved honour.”
Sohail Agboatwala, Troy’s senior vice-chancellor for student services and administration, said: “Kim Swan is a proud alumnus of Troy University, and he continues to value the relationships he has built, first as a student and later as an alumnus.
“He has been instrumental in opening doors that have led to Troy’s partnerships in Bermuda.”
A story on the university website read: “Swan, a 1980 Troy graduate, went on to a professional golf career on the PGA’s European Tour, becoming the first Bermudian to compete on the European Tour.
“He is an honorary member and former President of the Bermuda Professional Golfers Association and a much sought-after golf coach.
“As a golf manager, Swan presided over the St George’s Golf Club and Ocean View Golf Course in varying capacities until 2001.
“He owned a golf management company which managed golf operations, golf tournaments and promoted Bermuda tourism overseas.”
